Have you ever wondered what it’s like to serve in Kids Ministry? This week we hear from one of our teachers, Sarah Meyer, who serves in the second grade room.

What made you want to serve in kids ministry?

A desire to serve in kids ministry began when my kids were small. As a new parent and a new Christian, I wanted my kids to know right away what I had just recently found in Christ: forgiveness, redemption, salvation, love, hope, joy and peace. I wanted to learn how to share Jesus with them, so I thought what better way than to learn from other Christians at church who were teaching children God’s word and who He is. God grew a desire within me for my own children to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior to wanting all children to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and to know how majestic is His name in all the earth, He is Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God Almighty, and that everything that has breath should praise His name!

What has been a highlight from serving in kids ministry?

I have a lot of favorites/highlights when it comes to serving in kids ministry. One highlight would be the questions. Kids will ask any and all questions! It’s a great insight into what is going on in their hearts and minds. One kiddo asked “if we only have one God then how can he be everywhere at the same time?” Another child asked “if God knows everything and is in control of everything why did He even make the tree of knowledge of good and evil?” That one gave me a new appreciation for handling God’s word correctly in finding a way to give an answer that an elementary age student could understand. Also, hearing their prayers is precious. They are unfiltered and honest. They talk to God believing He can do anything because “there’s nothing my God cannot do!” (except sin, or lie…or do anything contrary to His nature) we learned that this year.

What is something you would say to someone considering serving in kids ministry?

Serving in children’s ministry is a blessing on so many levels! Personally you will grow in your faith, knowledge, and understanding of God’s word and who He is. Having to teach something means you have to know it in order to give it out. The time you spend preparing to teach means time spent in God’s word. Digging deeper and thinking about it in such a way that a young child could understand it, grows your heart and mind as God sanctifies and teaches you through the Holy Spirit. It is a blessing seeing God at work in children’s lives as they connect the dots and draw conclusions about who God is based on bible stories they have heard, remember past verses they have memorized, ask those thought provoking questions, and begin to understand they are a sinner in need of a savior at a heart level verses just knowing Jesus died on the cross and rose again will give your heart cause to soar praising God for all He has done and is doing! Getting to share your love for your Savior with children is a true joy and a privilege! It is humbling and a sweet blessing being a part of the miraculous work that God does in the lives of the children He is entrusting to us. We are called to disciple them teaching them who this Almighty, All powerful, Amazing God is. We are called to share the good news and in doing so God is glorified and lives are transformed.
