I’ve had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ for 38 years now, and in that time, I’ve seen financial feast and famine. In that time I have given well and given poorly, given generously and given begrudgingly, given wisely and yes, given stupidly. I’ve been haughty, and I’ve been humbled. I don’t know why we would expect our giving, which reflects our heart, would be any different than many other aspects of our spiritual lives.

Advent simply means the arrival of a notable person, thing, or event. For us, it is the arrival of Christ, both at his birth and also the anticipation of his imminent return. In Advent, we are reminded of the faithfulness of Christ’s coming. We remember the eager waiting for His first arrival and how He was faithful to come as He promised to rescue us from our sins. And our excitement is stirred as we await His return to bring justice and make all things new. It is a special time of the year, but one we must be careful not to waste.

There are many categories of life in which we are called to be healthy and many different ways we can be unhealthy. It is the tension between these categories that actually helps us make decisions. We want to be physically healthy. We also want to be financially healthy and have healthy relationships, a healthy marriage, and a healthy work-life balance. Health is multifaceted, and knowing that can help us have a healthier view of health. Think of it as stewardship and how the different areas in our lives that we are to steward can actually help give us a healthy balance.

In college at Arizona State, I was a member of a predominately African American church in Phoenix. While at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, I was a part of a Korean church. The believers in Thessalonica were a religious minority facing violent persecution. In Paul’s first letter to them (1 Thessalonians), that we covered this past fall, he encouraged the Thessalonians in their faithfulness despite the hardship they were facing. Having a daily bible reading for me is extremely important, it keeps me on a centered path that I need to have, and some people might say, well, you can't earn by works and I don't look at it like that. I look at it as a sponge trying to soak up as much as I possibly can. You know, I would never know how to find some of the things or have discussions with people about some of the things if I didn't get into the word and realizing that it's not my story, it's really God's story. And that really changed the way I looked at the Bible and the Bible Reading Plan.
